Jimmy & The Rackets – Black Eyes (1964)
British rock’n'roll group Jimmy Duncombe & The Rackets. “Black Eyes (Dark Eyes / Ochi Chornye / Les yeux noirs / Panung hideung / Ojos negros / Schwarze Augen)” played in the Dutch indorock style from The Tielman Brothers. In August 1961 Jimmy Duncombe started as lead guitarist from “Sonny Steward & The Dynamos” an engagement at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg (Reeperbahn), shortly after the Beatles had played there. During this time he learned a lot from Tony Sheridan, the club’s singer. During a gig at Bernhards Eck in Hanau, Germany in 1962 he saw The Tielman Brothers for the first time in the Jolly Bar. They became his all time favourite live band. February 24th, 1964. As The Continentals: Lawrence “Curly” Spector on bass, Barry Jeffers on the piano, Reginald “Buzz” Washington on drums, Joe Cunningham on guitar and Jimmy Duncombe lead guitar (left handed) and vocals, they had a demo record made at Tonstudio Bauer near Ludwigsburg in Germany. Within only 3 1/2 hours they recorded 13 songs! “My Soul”, “Pretend”, “Mona Lisa” and Jimmy’s brilliant guitar play on “Black Eyes” were on the list. All released as Jimmy Duncombe & The Records by Elite.
